While the individual layers’ of the package are recyclable the process of separating these layers for the recycling process is extremely difficult and costly. Multiple package material types are often required to ensure proper barrier protection, maintain package integrity and allow reuse. The longevity, reusability, size, weight, and flexibility of the package is optimized for energy efficiency. Energy saved during the creation, transport and storage of the package far exceeds that saved form the recycling process when compared to that of a standard recyclable rigid containers. In addition only a small percentage (often less than 15%) of all plastics are recycled and the uses for those recycled materials is limited. New technologies are emerging to increase the renewable capabilities of these bonded packaging types.
